Effect of Flipping and Gravity on Angular Distortion Control in Thick-Plate Welding

This experimental study examines angular-distortion evolution in multilayer, multipass double-U and double-V thick-plate welds. It proposes a three-stage evolution model and shows that flipping the plate during welding reduces final distortion, with additional flips improving control. Gravity delays distortion in the early stage, while the growth rate drops notably after the deposited thickness exceeds about 60%.
