In this study by Daneshpour et al., the mechanical and fatigue behaviour of laser and resistance spot welds in overlapped sheets of dual phase advanced high strength steel (DP780) and deep drawing steel (DC04), each 2.0 mm thick, were investigated. The objective was to evaluate the fatigue performance and monotonic behaviour of these joints under tensile-shear loading for automotive industry applications. Mechanical properties, failure behaviour, and fatigue life analyses of spot welds in both similar and dissimilar joints were examined through experimental and numerical methods. The structural stress concept was employed to characterise the fatigue lives of the spot-welded specimens. Results indicated that laser and resistance spot welds exhibited different failure modes and fatigue behaviours under cyclic loading at both “high load” and “low load” levels.
