Recent Developments in Laser Beam–Submerged Arc Hybrid Welding for Thick Sheets

The LUPuS process developed at RWTH Aachen combines a laser beam and submerged arc welding in a common process zone to reduce the number of passes required for thick sections. The study evaluates single- and double-sided joining of structural steels and API X65, root supports and hydrogen input, demonstrating feasibility up to 30 mm thickness. Laser oscillation reduced diffusible hydrogen from 6.64 to 5.83 ml/100 g.
